The Bay Bulls Lighthouse—also known as Bull Head Light—is a scenic highlight along the East Coast Trail’s Spout Path near Bay Bulls, NL.

Join biologist Dr. Taylor Brown for some of the best wildlife-viewing opportunities that Newfoundland has to offer! Hike to the iconic Bay Bulls lighthouse while watching puffins, whales, dolphins, and other wildlife feeding in the bay. There is also the possibility of observing land animals like moose, river otter, and several species of songbirds. This hike is focused on observing wildlife, but we will also explore the plant life, geology, and history of the region as we walk.

This 7-km round-trip (3.5 km each way) hike on the East Coast Trail is mostly easy-going and relatively flat. However, the very uneven and rocky terrain, and one difficult spot in particular, mean that this hike requires sturdy footwear and good bodily mobility. The trail is unfortunately NOT accessible to those with mobility challenges. Note that some areas of the trail may also be slippery and/or wet. Please bring extra layers in case the breeze picks up or the fog rolls in! Binoculars are also highly recommended.

Wildlife species we may encounter:
Humpback, minke, and fin whales; white-sided dolphins; ocean sunfish (Mola mola)
River otters, mink, moose
Atlantic Puffins, Northern Gannets, Common Murres, Razorbills, Shearwaters (Great, Manx, Sooty), Black-legged Kittiwakes, other gulls
Various landbirds including Boreal Chickadee, Black-backed Woodpecker, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, and Canada Jay
Who knows what else!
